Within a split second of time, which can be faster than even the smallest and briefest bit of danger you would face.
GFCI protection is especially crucial outside where there are greater chances for accidents. Outdoor outlets are more liable to be wet from rain or snow and when these become saturated with water they become even hazardous. You also should always use GFCI outlets for anything that you plug in outside, like Christmas lights and any power tool or even your electric lawnmower. If GFCI outlets are not available in your home you can install portable set of them that will plugged to a regular outlet.
